Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi and First Lady Fardowsa Mohamed Roble arrived in Israel on Sunday for a significant state visit, underscoring the deepening diplomatic and economic ties between the two entities. This visit marks a key milestone following Israel's recognition of Somaliland's sovereignty and the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in December 2025.

During the visit, President Abdullahi is set to officially open Somaliland’s embassy in Jerusalem’s Malha Technology Park, becoming the eighth country to establish an embassy in the city. The embassy opening follows a series of swift diplomatic developments, including the mutual appointment of ambassadors earlier this year: Mohammed Hagi as Somaliland’s first ambassador to Israel in February, and Michael Lotem as Israel’s non-resident ambassador to Somaliland in April. In May, President Isaac Herzog formally accepted Hagi’s credentials, reinforcing the growing relationship.

President Herzog personally welcomed Abdullahi upon his arrival, greeting him outside the embassy building and escorting him inside to meet assembled dignitaries. The two leaders, together with their close aides, engaged in private discussions covering areas of mutual interest and shared challenges such as maritime security. Herzog characterized the conversation as “interesting” and reflective of the broader momentum in Israel’s expanding engagement with Africa. Abdullahi expressed appreciation for the warm reception and emphasized the significance of Israel’s prompt recognition of Somaliland as a UN member state.

Beyond the embassy inauguration, Abdullahi’s visit includes a series of high-level meetings and events aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. On Monday, he is scheduled to meet with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, participate in discussions with government officials, and engage with leaders from Israel’s business sector, particularly those specializing in water management and renewable energy technologies. A dinner on Sunday evening brought together senior figures from Israel’s business community, highlighting economic collaboration as a central focus of the visit.

Abdullahi is also expected to address the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and visit the Supernova music festival memorial site during his stay, which will extend until Thursday. Supporters of the partnership emphasize that fostering ties between Israel and Somaliland could facilitate economic development, enhance maritime security, and promote technological innovation in the Horn of Africa region. The visit underscores both countries’ interest in expanding their international engagement and cooperation following the establishment of formal relations earlier this year.
