Iran experienced a total of 74 earthquakes over the seven-day period from July 11 to 17, according to data from the seismological networks of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran. The majority of these events, 62 in total, registered magnitudes below 3. An additional 12 earthquakes fell within the 3.0 to 4.0 magnitude range, with none exceeding a magnitude of 4 during this interval.
The strongest recorded quake during the week occurred on July 15 in Golestan province, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale. Among Iran’s provinces, Khorasan Razavi and North Khorasan reported the highest number of tremors, with 10 each. Kermanshah followed with seven, while Kerman and Yazd provinces each recorded six earthquakes. Several provinces, including Tehran, West Azarbaijan, Alborz, Chahar, Zanjan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Lorestan, and Hormozgan, did not report any seismic activity during this period.
Over the past calendar year, spanning March 2025 to March 2026, Iranian seismologists documented 2,380 earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 2.5. Of these, 910 events registered magnitudes greater than 3, 130 were above 4, and 15 earthquakes surpassed a magnitude of 5. These figures reflect the country’s position on the Iranian plateau, a region characterized by significant seismic activity.
Iran, located within a tectonically active zone, experiences approximately 2 percent of the world’s earthquakes. However, the country accounts for more than 6 percent of global earthquake-related fatalities recorded during the 20th century. This disproportionate impact underscores the ongoing challenges Iran faces regarding earthquake preparedness and risk mitigation.
