Toyota has introduced a fully electric version of its popular HiLux ute, aiming primarily at commercial and industrial users despite some limitations that may restrict its broader appeal. The battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant, tested extensively in mining operations, has already attracted orders from major companies such as BHP, Newcastle Coal, and Essential Energy, all of which have expressed commitments to reducing emissions in their fleets.
The HiLux BEV is offered alongside the longstanding diesel models but presents notable compromises compared to its combustion engine counterparts. It has a smaller battery capacity of 59.2 kWh and a real-world driving range estimated between 180 and 190 kilometers—significantly less than typical expectations for light commercial vehicles. This limited range is partly attributed to Toyota’s aim to maintain four-wheel-drive capability and payload capacity, with the BEV’s maximum towing capacity of two tonnes falling short of the diesel HiLux’s 3.5 tonnes. The electric model’s payload ranges from approximately 715 to 855 kilograms, which reviewers note is modest for a vehicle commonly referred to as a “one-tonner.”
Priced between AU$74,990 and AU$82,990 for various dual-cab configurations, the HiLux BEV carries a premium of around AU$17,000 over diesel versions, which are expected to continue outselling the electric variant by significant margins. Toyota anticipates selling roughly 500 BEV units in 2026, compared to an estimated 50,000 diesel HiLuxes.
While the electric HiLux offers benefits such as quiet operation and off-road capability consistent with the model’s heritage, some assessments have found its ride comfort lacking, with the suspension described as harsh over rough terrain. In addition to industrial users, small orders have come from niche groups such as organic farmers, beekeepers, and eco-tourism businesses, who may prioritize zero-emission credentials despite limited range.
Looking ahead, Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the HiLux in 2028, although infrastructure for hydrogen refueling remains scarce in Australia, limiting immediate prospects for widespread adoption of that technology.
The introduction of the HiLux BEV reflects Toyota’s cautious approach to electrifying a traditionally rugged and utilitarian vehicle segment. Some industry observers have questioned the practicality of the current electric model, citing its constraints and questioning why Toyota has not yet developed a plug-in hybrid variant to compete with emerging alternatives like the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute, which has gained traction in the Australian market.
In summary, while the Toyota HiLux BEV marks a step toward emission reduction for select commercial operators, its current specifications and market positioning suggest it will remain a niche offering rather than a mainstream replacement for diesel HiLux models in the near term.
