A significant number of Canadian employers are delaying or scaling back hiring plans amid ongoing political uncertainty, a recent survey by Express Employment Professionals reveals. The poll highlights growing concerns about an economic downturn and shifting government policies as key factors prompting companies to reconsider workforce expansion through the end of the year.

According to the survey, 21 percent of hiring managers cited fears of a recession or economic slowdown as the primary reason for pausing recruitment efforts. Another 14 percent are adopting a wait-and-see approach, holding off on hiring decisions until the consequences of policy changes become clearer, while 11 percent are postponing efforts until the economy stabilizes.

Bob Funk Jr., chief executive of Express Employment International, noted that “political instability creates an uncertain hiring environment and an unpredictable economy,” which complicates workforce planning.

The survey further reports that 60 percent of Canadian employers feel the current political climate is influencing their businesses, with 40 percent describing the impact as negative, and 20 percent perceiving it as positive.

Economic pressures extend beyond hiring decisions. Rising costs have affected operational capabilities for 61 percent of hiring managers surveyed. Nearly half (48 percent) view these cost increases as detrimental, while 13 percent see an upside. Budget constraints are most apparent in areas such as wages and compensation, raw materials and inventory, transportation and logistics, and hiring budgets.

Jobs seekers themselves are also experiencing the ripple effects of political and economic conditions. Over one-third said political factors have hindered their job search, and 92 percent indicated that rising costs have influenced their decision-making about pursuing new employment opportunities. Of these, 71 percent described the impact as moderate or substantial.

These findings come against the backdrop of a recent decline in Canadian employment figures. In September, Statistics Canada reported a loss of 68,000 jobs, pushing the national unemployment rate to 6.5 percent for the second consecutive month of decline in overall employment.

The Express Employment Professionals job insights survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll from May 15 to June 1, gathering responses from hiring managers across the country. The data reflects ongoing challenges for both employers and workers navigating a fluid economic and political landscape.
