Somerset and Hampshire secured their places in the Vitality Blast Finals Day, extending their impressive runs in the tournament with contrasting victories on July 16.

At Headingley, Somerset overcame a severe batting collapse to edge out Yorkshire in a thrilling contest. Chasing a target of 162, Somerset found themselves in dire straits at 59 for seven and then 82 for eight by the 15th over. Craig Overton played a pivotal role in the recovery, scoring an unbeaten 79 runs off 30 balls. His innings featured five sixes and eight fours, maintaining a strike rate of 263 as he brought Somerset home with just one ball remaining, sealing a narrow two-wicket win. This victory marks Somerset’s sixth consecutive appearance in the semi-finals of the competition, underlining their consistent performance in the Vitality Blast.

Meanwhile, at Hampshire, James Vince led his side to a commanding 75-run win over Essex, securing Hampshire’s record 12th appearance at Finals Day. Vince was in exceptional form, amassing 125 runs from 61 deliveries, including seven sixes. His innings came after Essex had earlier dropped him on 46, a reprieve that proved costly for the visitors. Vince’s performance was the cornerstone of Hampshire’s imposing total of 211 for three. Support came from Joe Weatherley, who contributed 46 runs off 26 balls, and Tony Albert with 22 off 25.

Essex struggled to counter Hampshire’s total, with their innings disrupted early by Sonny Baker, who claimed five wickets to dismantle the top order rapidly. Hampshire’s dominant bowling display prevented Essex from building momentum in their chase.

With these results, Hampshire will now face Notts Outlaws in the semi-finals. Notts secured their place by defending a total of 163 against Surrey, winning by seven runs at Trent Bridge. The stage is set for intense battles as the Vitality Blast approaches its climax.
