Nottinghamshire suffered their first home defeat in nearly two years as Somerset secured a commanding 306-run victory on Tuesday, propelling the visitors above the defending champions in the County Championship standings. The loss ended Nottinghamshire’s 14-match unbeaten home run dating back to May 2024 and dropped them four places in the table, while Somerset climbed into the top three.
The match, played at Trent Bridge, saw Somerset exert early control with their bowling attack on a pitch that offered assistance. After resuming at 47 for three overnight, Nottinghamshire’s innings collapsed rapidly to 104 for eight within roughly 80 minutes, with Craig Overton claiming two wickets to complete a five-wicket haul—the first of the season for the all-rounder. The home side’s fortunes were rescued somewhat by their number nine batsman, Fergus O’Neill, who remained resolute, scoring an unbeaten 54 runs and preventing an innings defeat. His partnership with seam bowler Dillon Pennington added 48 runs over 18 overs spanning a delayed lunch interval before Overton removed the final two wickets.
For Somerset, the victory ended a frustrating run of three matches where they had built first-innings leads but failed to convert into wins, resulting in two defeats and one rain-affected draw. These recent results had contrasted with their performance quality, which suggested a higher standing in the tightly contested Championship table.
A significant contribution came from 18-year-old Tom Rew, who scored his maiden first-class century in the third innings. His 100 not out came at 18 years and 197 days old, narrowly younger than the age his brother James took to reach the same milestone in 2022. Aside from batting heroics, Tom Rew also took three catches behind the stumps as wicketkeeper, including a notable dismissal to complete a pair against fellow batsman Lyndon James. James had departed earlier to join the England squad preparing for the upcoming Test match at The Oval, and if selected, he is expected to return for Somerset’s next fixture against Warwickshire at Taunton, where Somerset may have a reduced squad of just 13 players.
Craig Overton assumed captaincy duties in this match after Lewis Gregory was sidelined with a pulled hamstring sustained the previous day. Reflecting on the season, Overton acknowledged the points dropped but remained optimistic about Somerset's prospects, saying, “We have left a lot of points out there this season and could have been 40-odd points better off, yet we are still in the mix.”
Nottinghamshire, meanwhile, experienced a rare downturn in form. Only two of their 20 innings during the season had produced scores above 36 in this match, and aside from O’Neill’s bowling contributions, the visiting side’s attack lacked penetration. Should Nottinghamshire address these issues promptly, they remain among a group of teams poised to contest the Championship heading into the critical final stages in September.
