Alex Hughes, the son of former Manchester United and Wales footballer Mark Hughes, died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, a coroner’s inquest has determined. The 38-year-old collapsed in his bedroom at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire, on the morning of June 19. His two young sons discovered him around 7 a.m., and his eldest child, aged 11, attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to revive him.

Alex Hughes was employed in player recruitment for League Two club Grimsby Town. Following an investigation at Cheshire Coroner’s Court in Warrington, the court ruled that his death was due to natural causes. Sudden Adult Death Syndrome is linked to unexpected cardiac arrest in younger individuals without prior symptoms.

Mark Hughes, 62, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career that included two Premier League titles with Manchester United and 16 international goals for Wales, previously served as the manager of the Welsh national team. Addressing the loss at the time, he acknowledged the profound impact of his son’s passing on the family.
