Sonay Kartal advanced in the Wuhan Open with a notable victory over Emma Raducanu, highlighting the benefits of her protected ranking status. Kartal, 24, who has slipped to No. 170 in the world rankings following an extended absence due to injury, gained entry into the tournament’s main draw through this system designed to assist players returning from long layoffs.
In the second round, Kartal delivered a commanding performance against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, ranked 12th globally, winning 6-0, 7-5. This win marks her most significant victory by ranking in over a year. Kartal is scheduled to face Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, ranked 33rd, later in the competition.
Reflecting on her form, Kartal said she was able to reach a high level early in the match and glimpsed progress compared to her tennis six months prior. Her protected ranking status has allowed her to compete despite her lower current ranking, a provision available to players sidelined by injury for at least six months.
Meanwhile, Raducanu, ranked 107th, is dealing with a foot injury and is considering withdrawing from the remainder of the season. However, she would need to be sidelined for a minimum of six months to qualify for a protected ranking in future tournaments.
