British tennis player Sonay Kartal has made a strong return to the WTA Tour following a six-month absence due to a stress fracture in her lower back. The 24-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open after a commanding 6-2, 6-0 victory over former Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini.
Kartal’s injury, which occurred in March, forced her out of competition for much of the season, causing her to miss the remaining Grand Slam events and leading to a significant drop in her ranking. Prior to the injury, she was enjoying a breakthrough period, having climbed as high as world No. 44 after reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon and going deep at Indian Wells. Despite battling pain so severe that she struggled with basic tasks like brushing her teeth, Kartal focused on careful rehabilitation, opting not to rush back onto the court.
She began her comeback at the Billie Jean King Cup tie against the Czech Republic at the end of September, where she was defeated by Marie Bouzkova in straight sets as Britain's team were eliminated by the eventual winners. Kartal has since gained momentum, displaying increased confidence and improved form with each match in China.
At the Wuhan Open, Kartal also recorded a notable second-round win over ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic before defeating Paolini, who is ranked 33rd in the world. Kartal described her performance against Paolini as "pretty flawless" and said she maintained strong concentration throughout the match. Her victory guaranteed her a prize money payout of £74,000 and ensured a rise in her ranking from No. 170 to 113, making her the lowest-ranked player ever to reach the last eight at this event.
Looking ahead, Kartal is set to face fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. She expressed optimism about her prospects, attributing her successful return to listening to her body and taking advice from fellow players who have experienced injury setbacks. Kartal emphasized her belief in having many competitive years ahead and the value of patience during recovery.
Her resurgence highlights her resilience and determination to regain her position among the top players on the WTA Tour following a difficult period marked by injury and significant time away from competitive tennis.
