Sondad, the Washington DC-sired five-year-old gelding, is poised to contend for a third major sprint handicap victory this season, extending his successful run under trainers Mick and David Easterby. The horse’s performance notably improved following the addition of a visor in 2025, marking a turning point in his racing career.

Last year, Sondad secured a win at Ascot in May, followed by a triumph in a six-furlong race on Derby day at Epsom. He rounded off the season with strong placings in high-profile sprints, finishing among the top contenders in the Ayr Silver Cup, won by Candy, and at Ascot behind Aramram. This season, he has continued to demonstrate progress, moving up from a disappointing effort behind Dark Thirty at York in May to successfully defend his title at Epsom in June.

At Royal Ascot’s Wokingham Handicap two weeks later, Sondad faced a challenging draw in stall two, which limited his chances and resulted in a ninth-place finish behind the winner, Double Rush. Despite this disadvantage, the performance was regarded as respectable given the circumstances.

Sondad rebounded well in his most recent outing at the Curragh on the undercard of the Irish Oaks, where he, partnered with jockey Joanna Mason—granddaughter of trainer Mick Easterby—defeated his familiar rival Dark Thirty. Entering this race carrying a 6lb penalty yet receiving a favorable weight allowance of 1lb, Sondad is considered well-positioned with a draw in stall 21, which should allow him to be competitive.

The upcoming Stewards’ Cup is expected to be highly competitive, with notable contenders including Far Above Dream, Annaf, Stratusnine, and the 2024 winner Get It, all capable of challenging for victory. Sondad’s consistent form and recent performances suggest he will be closely watched as a leading contender in this prestigious handicap sprint.
