Sony Pictures has committed $100 million to invest in Cosm, a virtual reality venue operator, as part of the studio's effort to expand into communal entertainment experiences. The investment grants Sony a minority stake in Cosm, although the exact percentage was not publicly disclosed. Additionally, Sony Pictures CEO Ravi Ahuja will join Cosm’s Board of Directors, the company announced Wednesday.
Based in El Segundo, Cosm currently operates three venues located at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, as well as sites in Dallas, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia. The company has plans to open further locations in Detroit and Cleveland. Cosm markets itself as a “shared reality venue,” offering immersive experiences through a large, wraparound screen designed to surround attendees with digital effects.
While the company primarily focuses on sporting events, its programming has also included Cirque du Soleil performances and collaborations with major studios. Notably, Cosm recently hosted special screenings of the 2001 film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” to commemorate the franchise’s 25th anniversary, in partnership with Warner Bros.
The investment by Sony Pictures underscores the studio’s strategic move into physical, interactive entertainment spaces, reflecting a broader trend among media companies to explore new forms of consumer engagement outside traditional film and television distribution.
