Sony Group Corp. reported a 32 percent increase in profit for its fiscal first quarter, driven primarily by strong demand for its gaming products. The Tokyo-based company announced the results on Friday, underscoring the growth amid continued momentum in the entertainment sector.
However, Sony also cautioned about potential disruptions following a recent earthquake in southwestern Kumamoto. The natural disaster affected some of the company’s semiconductor production facilities in the region. While one facility remained suspended, others have resumed operations. Sony indicated that there was no major physical damage to its infrastructure.
At the time of the earnings release, the company had not fully assessed the financial impact of the earthquake and therefore did not factor any related costs into the reported results. Prior to the earthquake, Sony had affirmed its expectation of achieving record profit for the entire fiscal year.
The semiconductor segment plays a key role in Sony’s broader business strategy, supporting various product lines including gaming consoles and electronic devices. The company’s ability to quickly restore production in affected facilities will be critical to maintaining its growth trajectory in the coming quarters.
