South African authorities detained more than 900 individuals during a series of nationwide protests targeting undocumented migrants on Tuesday. While the majority of the demonstrations remained peaceful, some events escalated into violence, resulting in looting and one reported fatality.
The protests, organized by a coalition of over 20 civil society organizations including the March and March movement, were held across the country to mark an unofficial deadline for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa. According to Deputy National Police Commissioner Tebello Mosikili, 120 separate marches took place, with 108 unfolding without incident. Police intervened in 12 locations where unrest occurred.
Mosikili outlined that the arrests were linked to a range of offenses, such as public violence, robbery, and immigration violations. The deceased individual was reported to have been shot during the disturbances, though警方 did not provide further details about the circumstances or suspects involved.
The protests reflect ongoing tensions in South Africa regarding immigration and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals. Authorities have been tasked with managing the demonstration's security challenges while trying to uphold public order amid these expressions of social discontent.
