South Carolina's women’s basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll for the fifth time in seven years, according to a national media panel of 31 voters. The Gamecocks, coached by Dawn Staley, received 23 first-place votes, highlighting their status as a preseason favorite ahead of the upcoming season.
Following South Carolina in the poll are Connecticut, USC, Duke, and Michigan, completing the top five. USC secured the remaining two first-place votes, reflecting strong expectations for the Trojans as they prepare for a competitive season.
Staley acknowledged the dual nature of the top ranking, describing it as both a “gift and a curse.” While she said she personally avoids focusing on the poll’s rankings, she noted that her players regard the No. 1 spot as a sign of respect and a motivator. The Gamecocks face a demanding nonconference schedule early in the season, including matchups against five ranked opponents—among them UConn, USC, and Duke. According to Staley, the challenging schedule is partly driven by name, image, and likeness (NIL) considerations as well as the desire to compete at a high level.
The women’s basketball season officially begins Nov. 2 for both USC and defending national champion UCLA, which was ranked 11th in the preseason poll. USC will aim to leverage the return of star player JuJu Watkins, who missed last season due to recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
In related college sports news, Oregon football coach Dan Lanning commented on the recent arrest of wide receiver Evan Stewart. Stewart was taken into custody early Sunday on charges of driving under the influence. Lanning stated that the program is gathering more information and will respond with appropriate measures.
Additionally, Auburn linebacker Xavier Atkins announced via social media that he is departing the program and intends to enter the transfer portal when it opens later this year.
