South East Water has urged residents in parts of Kent and Sussex to reduce water consumption amid supply disruptions caused by a recent heatwave. The utility company emphasized the importance of using water only for essential activities such as drinking, washing, and cooking to help maintain the network’s functionality.
The heatwave, which has led to increased demand, has put significant strain on the water supply system. A spokesperson for South East Water compared the network to a motorway, explaining that just as roads become congested when many vehicles travel simultaneously, the water supply can be overwhelmed when large numbers of consumers use water at the same time.
As a result, officials advised against using non-essential water-consuming devices, including jet washers, hosepipes, sprinklers, and paddling pools. The company encouraged residents to consider alternatives, such as water blasters, to reduce water usage during this period of high demand.
The appeal follows recent reports of supply interruptions affecting several communities within the utility’s service area. South East Water continues to monitor the situation and is working to ensure a steady supply while encouraging conservation efforts to prevent further disruptions.
