South Shields secured a 3-1 victory over Chester in a key National League North fixture at Mariners Park on Saturday. The match, featuring two teams in the top six, saw the Seals overturn an early deficit to claim all three points on home turf.
Chester took the lead midway through the first half when Billy Waters scored from a tight angle, marking his influence as an experienced forward. However, South Shields responded quickly. Cedwyn Scott equalised within minutes, capitalising on a rebound after debutant Chester goalkeeper Joe Wallis parried an initial shot from Dan Dodds.
Following the equaliser, Chester created opportunities but failed to convert, with Jake Griffin’s defensive efforts and missed chances from Kofi Moore keeping the score level heading into halftime.
The decisive phase came after the break. South Shields took the lead in the 60th minute when Toby Onanaye finished a counterattack, slipping a shot past Wallis. Later, substitute Caden Kelly secured the victory six minutes from time, taking advantage of an error from Chester defender Nathan Woodthorpe to make it 3-1.
The result continues South Shields’ strong form at home, adding valuable points in the competitive battle for promotion places, while Chester were unable to maintain their early advantage despite a promising start.
