A historic South Yarra residence dating back to Melbourne’s 1880s suburban expansion, known as Heathcote, recently sold at auction for $5.91 million. The property, located on Hawksburn Road, was marketed with a price guide between $5.5 million and $6 million by agents Nicholas Brooks and Ella Atkins of Marshall White.

The four-bedroom, two-bathroom home attracted three active bidders during a by-invitation auction held shortly after an initial expressions of interest campaign ended on September 7. The property was only on the market for two weeks and recorded approximately 3,500 views on realestate.com.au during that time.

Heathcote retains many period features, including arched hallways, tuck-pointed brickwork, fireplaces, and pressed-metal ceilings. The single-level dwelling, which also includes a study, boasts a wraparound veranda that overlooks landscaped gardens. Additional amenities include a triple garage with an adjoining workshop. The residence sits on a 638 square metre block and is constructed of double-fronted Hawthorn brick.

Originally financed by the Melbourne Permanent Building Society—a key financial institution in the 19th century—the property last changed hands in 2000 when it sold for $1.452 million. At that time, it was purchased by the late Norman Adler, former managing director of Santos, who held the house as a rental property following his retirement.
