Southampton secured their first away victory of the season with a narrow 1-0 win over Norwich City in a League One clash at Carrow Road on Sunday. The decisive goal came in the 54th minute when Japan forward Kuryu Matsuki capitalized on a rebound, slotting the ball in from close range.

Norwich goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw, deputizing for the injured Vladan Kovacevic, made several key saves throughout the match, including a double stop from Southampton’s Sam Edozie and substitute Caspar Jander during the first half. Despite these efforts, Grimshaw was unable to prevent Matsuki’s finish, which ultimately proved to be the match-winner.

The victory propelled Southampton under manager Tonda Eckert to seventh place in the League One standings, while Norwich suffered their fourth consecutive league loss and their seventh defeat in total this season.

The match featured several notable moments early on, with Norwich winger Oscar Schwartau missing an early chance after cutting inside from the right but shooting wide from 12 yards. Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse also came close, his free kick narrowly missing the target in the first half. Norwich captain Pelle Mattsson delivered a dangerous cross midway through the half, but Mathias Kvistgaarden’s header was comfortably caught by Southampton goalkeeper Daniel Peretz.

Southampton endured a setback when midfielder Flynn Downes had to leave the field due to injury shortly after the 20-minute mark. In first-half injury time, Grimshaw denied Edozie with a close-range parry, maintaining the deadlock at halftime.

After the break, Matsuki’s goal gave Southampton the lead, marking his second of the season. Norwich responded with sustained pressure, and Jose Cordoba came closest to an equalizer when his close-range header was heroically cleared off the line by Southampton striker Lewis Dobbin. In the closing moments, Jander’s sliding shot from seven yards narrowly flew over the crossbar, denying Norwich a late chance to salvage a point.

The result leaves Norwich seeking to halt their losing streak in upcoming fixtures, while Southampton will look to build on their first away success as the season progresses.
