Southend United have strengthened their midfield ahead of the 2026-27 season with the signings of Anthony Hartigan and Darren Oldaker, a move described by manager Kieron Dyer as a “massive coup.” The pair, both experienced midfielders with recent success in the National League, were unveiled alongside the club’s new kit at Roots Hall.
Hartigan, 26, joins the Shrimpers on a three-year contract after his tenure at Barnet, where he made 32 appearances in League Two last season. He was instrumental in Barnet’s National League title win during the 2024-25 campaign. Dyer, who took over as Southend manager just two weeks ago after leaving his coaching role at Chesterfield, highlighted Hartigan’s ability on the ball and his effectiveness in advancing play. “Anthony is brave on the ball and great at building attacks,” Dyer said. He added that Hartigan is among the top players in League Two for progressive passing, underscoring the significance of securing his signature following his contract expiration earlier this month.
Joining Hartigan is 27-year-old Darren Oldaker, who also boasts National League success, having won the title with Chesterfield in the 2023-24 season under the management of Paul Cook and Kieron Dyer. Oldaker arrives from Swindon Town for an undisclosed fee, bringing experience from both League Two and League One, where he previously played for Gillingham. Oldaker expressed enthusiasm for his move, calling Southend a “massive club” and citing positive conversations with the manager as a key factor in his decision. “I’m really pleased and excited to be here,” he said.
Dyer emphasized that the acquisition of Hartigan and Oldaker will have a strong impact on team culture and leadership within the squad. “Both have had promotions from the National League and are capable of playing at a really high standard in League Two,” he said. “They’ll lead by example and help our less experienced players. It’s only the start but it’s fantastic and shows we mean business.”
While Southend have bolstered their midfield options with these signings, they have also lost Keenan Appiah-Forson, 24, who has moved on to League Two side Oldham. The additions of Hartigan and Oldaker signal a clear intent from Southend to improve their standing and competitiveness for the upcoming season.
