Southend United secured a late 1-0 victory over Boston United in a National League match on Saturday, thanks to a 94th-minute goal from substitute Sahid Kamara. The win maintains Southend's position third in the league and continues their strong away form.
Boston started the match strongly, with Ollie Bostock, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, scoring within the first 42 seconds. Bostock maneuvered skillfully around the edge of the box before sending a left-footed shot into the top corner. However, Southend responded just 15 minutes later when Promise Omochore leveled the score after capitalizing on a defensive error by Boston's Jake Rooney.
Southend manager Kieron Dyer acknowledged the necessity of securing all three points in the match, stating his team was aware that a draw would not suffice. “We kicked on and sensed we were going to score. And what a goal to finish it off!” Dyer said, praising Kamara’s decisive strike.
Boston manager Paul Hurst made six changes following a heavy 6-0 defeat at Yeovil the previous weekend. Despite the early setback, his side displayed resilience throughout the match and came close to claiming a point. Hurst emphasized his appreciation for his players’ effort, noting the disappointment of narrowly missing out on a result for their performance at home.
In the second half, Southend continued to press, with several attempts on goal. After Omochore exited due to injury before the break, Dyer introduced Lewys Twamley for Harry Cardwell to bolster the attack. Southend created multiple scoring opportunities, including a strong save from Boston goalkeeper Louis Chadwick, who also denied a close-range effort by Twamley.
The decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Kamara smashed a shot from about 20 yards out, following a well-coordinated team move across the field, sending the ball past Chadwick and into the net in front of a sold-out away support.
Boston United, now with just one point from their last five home league matches, showed determination despite the defeat. Hurst highlighted the narrow margin and his players’ commitment as positive takeaways from the contest, even though the loss was difficult to accept.
The result solidifies Southend’s strong standing in the National League, while Boston will look to rebound as they attempt to improve their home form in upcoming fixtures.
