The Chicago White Sox acquired right-handed pitcher José Urquidy from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday in exchange for minor-league pitcher Félix Doroteo. This deal marks the second trade between the two teams in less than a month.

Urquidy, 31, appeared in five relief outings for the Pirates this season, posting an 0-1 record with an 8.53 ERA and six strikeouts across 6⅓ innings from March 29 to April 13. At the Triple-A level with Indianapolis, he recorded a 5-4 record and a 3.66 ERA with 73 strikeouts in 83⅔ innings over 17 starts. The Pirates designated him for assignment on Friday.

In his seven major league seasons, Urquidy has compiled a 27-17 record with a 4.07 ERA and 335 strikeouts in 413⅔ innings across 86 appearances, including 70 starts. He has previously played for the Houston Astros (2019–23), Detroit Tigers (2025), and Pirates (2026).

White Sox manager Will Venable indicated that Urquidy will report to the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte initially. "He’s an option for us," Venable said Monday. "We know how quickly things change here and there’ll be need, and it could be tomorrow for all we know. He’s a piece that we’re excited to have and can come up when there’s a need."

Doroteo, 21, was in his first professional season with the Arizona Complex League White Sox, where he posted a 3-2 record, a 4.50 ERA, and 24 strikeouts in 19 innings over 16 appearances, including one start. The White Sox signed him as an international free agent on January 15, 2025.

This transaction continues a growing trade relationship between the White Sox and Pirates. Earlier in July, Chicago traded infielder Jacob Gonzalez and pitcher Brandon Eisert to Pittsburgh in exchange for a Competitive Balance Round A draft pick (No. 34) and left-handed pitcher Jaden Woods. The White Sox subsequently used that draft pick to select infielder Landon Thome from Nazareth.

Following Sunday’s trade, the White Sox’s 40-man roster stands at 39 players. The Major League Baseball trade deadline is August 3.
