Abu Dhabi-based Space42 is developing satellite connectivity technology that enables ordinary smartphones to connect directly to satellites without requiring specialized hardware. This innovation aims to provide mobile coverage in locations where traditional 4G and 5G networks are unavailable, such as remote deserts, oceans, and mountainous regions.

The project is being advanced through Equatys, a company focused on deploying direct-to-device satellite communications. Viktor Stoyanov, Chief Operating Officer of Smart Solutions at Space42, said the technology will eventually allow both Android and iPhone users to access satellite connectivity on their existing devices. This approach seeks to eliminate the need for separate satellite phones or additional attachments, potentially expanding mobile service to underserved and hard-to-reach areas.

In addition to enhancing connectivity, Space42 is leveraging satellite, mapping, and artificial intelligence technologies to support autonomous mobility initiatives within the United Arab Emirates. The company is collaborating with South Korean autonomous mobility firm A2Z to deploy a next-generation autonomous vehicle fleet in Abu Dhabi, planned for deployment before the end of the year. High-precision maps developed through UAE satellite infrastructure will provide vehicles with detailed road and environmental data, supplementing onboard sensors to improve navigation.

Stoyanov highlighted the importance of continuous satellite connectivity for autonomous vehicles, emphasizing that constant communication with control centers is critical to ensure vehicles remain on course and operate safely.

Space42 is also advancing its Foresight synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, designed to capture Earth surface data in conditions where traditional optical satellites are hindered by darkness or cloud cover. Abdullah Sharif, Senior Manager for the Foresight Constellation, explained that SAR technology uses radar signals instead of visible light, enabling imaging at night and through adverse weather, such as smoke from fires or explosions.

This ability to see through obstacles and gather reliable data regardless of environmental conditions positions SAR as a valuable tool for disaster monitoring, infrastructure assessment, and terrain tracking. Sharif described this capability as a longstanding ambition, enabling observation where conventional methods are blind.

By integrating these technologies, Space42 aims to advance telecommunications and autonomous mobility infrastructure, addressing critical connectivity gaps while supporting emerging smart city and transportation models within the UAE and beyond.
