SpaceX has agreed to testify before the New York City Council regarding artificial intelligence-related safety concerns, following the issuance of a subpoena by the council, according to Council Speaker Julie Menin. The agreement came on Tuesday, with the company scheduled to send a representative to appear at a hearing set for Friday.
The City Council had initially invited SpaceX to participate alongside other prominent AI firms, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and Meta, at a previous hearing held last week. That session featured virtual testimonies from officials representing those companies, as well as input from AI safety experts and whistleblowers, such as former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon.
SpaceX, however, did not attend the initial hearing, an absence that Menin, a Democratic representative from Manhattan, described as "unacceptable." The council responded by issuing a subpoena on September 28, shortly after the other companies confirmed their participation.
At this time, it remains unclear who will represent SpaceX at the upcoming session. Efforts to obtain comment from the company were unsuccessful. The New York City Council has continued to emphasize the importance of engaging with AI developers to address potential risks associated with the technology as part of an ongoing oversight effort.
