Spain’s left-wing government approved a series of new social benefits on Tuesday, just weeks before a snap election scheduled for next month. The measures aim to provide greater support for families and individuals facing specific health and social challenges.

Among the key initiatives is increased assistance for families caring for seriously ill children, intended to alleviate some of the financial and caregiving burdens faced by these households. Additionally, the government expanded temporary sick leave benefits to include women experiencing menopause-related health conditions, recognizing the impact these can have on their ability to work.

The reforms also broaden access to survivor pensions, extending eligibility to unmarried couples, which marks a shift toward greater inclusivity in social welfare policies.

Speaking on the timing of the announcement, government spokeswoman Elma Saiz emphasized that the administration has an ongoing responsibility to meet the needs of citizens regardless of the upcoming electoral process. The measures come as the ruling coalition prepares to face voters in a snap election called earlier this year amid political uncertainty.
