Spain’s national football team encountered significant challenges in their recent World Cup qualifying match against Cape Verde in Atlanta, highlighting the impact of missing key players Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. The match, which ended in a surprising 0-0 draw, underlined concerns about Spain’s offensive potency in the absence of the two wide attackers.
Coach Luis de la Fuente faced difficulties breaking down Cape Verde’s defensive setup throughout the game. Yamal and Williams, both sidelined for extended periods due to hamstring injuries, made brief appearances in the latter stages as Spain sought to inject creativity and width. However, even their late introductions failed to alter the scoreline.
During the bulk of the match, wide positions were covered by Ferran Torres and Gavi, both typically more inclined to operate centrally. This shift limited Spain’s natural width, with Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella providing much of the attacking width before Yamal and Williams came on. De la Fuente acknowledged the need for patience, emphasizing that there was no cause for alarm despite the underwhelming performance.
“Cape Verde showed us we have to keep improving, we have to keep doing things the way we always do, putting our heart and soul into it and using the talent of these players,” de la Fuente said, noting that the team must focus on regaining the full capabilities of their important players as the campaign progresses. He confirmed that Barcelona teenager Yamal and Athletic Bilbao’s Williams are recovering well and were brought on at the appropriate moment in the match.
Goalkeeper Unai Simon explained that Gavi’s usual central role was intended to create space on the flanks, a strategy that was hindered without Yamal and Williams. “We needed Nico and Lamine to be able to face them down and generate that superiority over their defence,” he said. Simon maintained that despite the draw, the team maintained intensity and control but acknowledged that finishing was lacking. “We have to erase this result from our minds and focus on the things we have to improve. That is being better in their box, when we were too anxious with chances,” he added.
Striker Mikel Oyarzabal echoed the sentiment, expressing confidence in the team’s chances moving forward. “We had enough chances but just weren’t calm and confident enough. We were the only team that was going to win the game,” he said. “We are still united. If we stay calm, everything will be fine.”
The performance has placed added pressure on the 18-year-old Yamal, whose return to competitive action after an injury marks a critical moment for both the player and the team as they seek to regain momentum in the qualifying campaign.
