Eugenio Chacarra secured his fourth DP World Tour title on Sunday by winning the DP World India Championship at Delhi Golf Club, finishing two strokes ahead of the field. The Spaniard closed the tournament at 21-under par, extending his impressive run of form and moving to the top of the Race to Dubai rankings.
Chacarra, 26, who had already claimed victories at the Dutch Open and the Italian Open earlier this season and the Indian Open last year, carded a final round two-under 70 to clinch the win. New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier finished second at 19-under, while Spain’s Angel Hidalgo and Poland’s Adrian Meronk tied for third at 15-under. Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood of England ended the tournament in a tie for fifth place at 13-under.
American Patrick Reed, who came into the tournament as one of the main contenders, finished well behind Chacarra at eight-under. Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy, who had been in contention amid weather disruptions over the first two days, tied for 42nd at four-under and remains third in the Race to Dubai standings.
The tournament faced weather delays, which led to catch-up rounds on Sunday morning. Chacarra played his third round early, carding a remarkable nine-under 63 to extend his lead. Despite dealing with a broken toe sustained a few weeks ago and a neck injury during the event, he maintained his momentum in the final round with three birdies and a single bogey.
“Last week it was really tough with the broken toe, but this week, with the ice and medication, it got better,” Chacarra said. He also credited his physiotherapist with helping him manage a neck issue that threatened his performance. “Playing at less than 100 percent and still being able to win against this field gives me great motivation.”
After the victory, Chacarra dedicated the win to his grandfather, who passed away 10 days earlier. “He is watching me somewhere from up there,” he said, visibly emotional.
Looking ahead, Chacarra acknowledged the challenges in maintaining his lead in the Race to Dubai. “Rory in Dubai always plays well, and Patrick too. Two of the best players in the world are coming after me, and I know they’re not going to make it easy,” he said.
