The recent victory of Spain in the 2026 World Cup is expected to strengthen sports cooperation between Kuwait and Spain, according to Spanish Ambassador Manuel Hernández Gamallo. The ambassador made the remarks during a celebratory event held at his residence in Kuwait City on July 25, which was attended by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense Sheikh Dr. Abdullah Meshaal Al-Sabah, as well as numerous ambassadors and diplomatic representatives.

Ambassador Gamallo highlighted the potential for expanding partnerships between sports institutions in the two countries. He pointed to opportunities for official agreements to formalize cooperation, as well as initiatives to bring La Liga, Spain’s top football league, to Kuwait. This could include organizing sporting events and matches featuring Spanish clubs in the country.

The ambassador noted the widespread popularity of Spanish football among Kuwait’s citizens and residents, emphasizing that many fans closely followed Spain’s matches throughout the World Cup and supported the national team until its eventual triumph. He expressed gratitude toward those who joined the embassy in celebrating Spain’s victory and said the achievement further deepened his personal connection with Kuwait.

Kuwait’s existing foundation for sports collaboration was also underscored. Several football academies in Kuwait currently operate under Spanish curricula and are supervised by Spanish coaches. Ambassador Gamallo suggested that this foundation could serve as a platform for advancing cooperation, including engaging the private sector to promote joint sports initiatives.

He revealed that he has received various proposals aimed at enhancing Kuwaiti-Spanish sports ties and expressed optimism about the future, anticipating “pleasant surprises” that could emerge from strengthened collaboration. These prospective developments signal a growing interest in leveraging Spain’s recent football success as a catalyst for deeper cultural and sports exchanges between the two nations.
