The Kerala Police have launched a specialized task force named ‘Speak Up’ to address domestic violence and support women who experience abuse. The initiative, established under the supervision of Ajitha Begum, IPS, aims to encourage survivors to seek assistance without fear of stigma or social pressure. This move follows directives from the State Home Department.
‘Speak Up’ is designed to offer comprehensive support to survivors, including legal aid, counseling services, safe housing options, and livelihood assistance to help rebuild their lives. The program’s objective is to empower women by providing clear guidance on how to file complaints and understand the legal remedies available.
Home Minister Ramesh Cheminthala highlighted the severity of domestic violence, describing it as a “silent killer” that inflicts both mental and physical harm on women. He emphasized that justice should not be denied to victims due to economic constraints or familial fears.
Kerala continues to face significant challenges related to domestic violence. Over the past seven years, 92 women have died as a result of such abuse within the state. Many cases go unreported as victims often hesitate due to fear and social pressure. The ‘Speak Up’ initiative specifically targets these unreported cases, aiming to reach women who may currently lack access to support systems.
By raising awareness about legal rights and available resources, the task force seeks to reduce underreporting of domestic abuse and improve access to protection for survivors. The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the complex social and legal issues surrounding domestic violence in Kerala.
