Special needs students at SK Taman Sri Sinar in Segambut, Kuala Lumpur, now have access to a newly established sensory facility designed to support their sensory, emotional, and physical development. The purpose-built multisensory room was officially launched recently, marking the first fully equipped Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) facility under the Sentul District Education Office.
Segambut Member of Parliament and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh, highlighted the growing demand for such facilities amid rising enrollment numbers. She referenced data from the Federal Territories Kuala Lumpur Education Department showing an increase in special needs students from 5,088 in 2021 to 8,136 in 2026—an approximate 60% rise over five years. “This demonstrates the need for schools to have sensory rooms and specialized equipment to support these students,” Yeoh said during the launch event.
SK Taman Sri Sinar has also experienced a steady increase in special education student enrollment, growing from 55 pupils in 2024 to 76 in the current year, with six dedicated special education classes. Senior Assistant for Special Education at the school, Rohayati Ahmad, explained that the new facility allows for a range of learning and therapy activities aimed at enhancing sensory stimulation, concentration, emotional regulation, as well as cognitive and physical skills. The room is equipped with items such as swings, balance equipment, and a climbing wall, which can be tailored to individual student needs. Some apparatus target hyperactivity, while others focus on improving coordination, balance, and focus.
When queried about the possibility of extending access to students from other schools, Yeoh said that while the facility’s timetable is primarily dedicated to SK Taman Sri Sinar’s classes, provisions are being considered to allow outside pupils to use the room during other periods, subject to safety assessments.
The project was funded through a RM99,367 allocation from Yeoh’s parliamentary office this year. Approximately RM47,000 was invested in outfitting the multisensory room, with the remaining RM52,000 allocated for repainting school buildings. Yeoh noted that Members of Parliament receive a total of RM3.7 million annually in constituency allocations, which can be used for grants and infrastructure projects. Last year, Yeoh directed RM1.5 million toward schools in the constituency, with a further RM1 million allocated for upgrades in 2024. She emphasized that infrastructure development was prioritized to benefit the largest number of pupils.
The launch ceremony was attended by Asrina Ayu Chik, Deputy District Education Officer of the Sentul District Education Office Learning Sector, along with SK Taman Sri Sinar headmistress Kalsom Jab.
