A trek through the dense jungle foothills of Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok offers visitors a chance to experience two striking waterfalls amidst humid, verdant surroundings. Visitors embarking on the trail to Sendang Gile encounter lush greenery and a challenging tropical climate, with humidity that quickly soaks hikers shortly after setting off.
Guided tours of the trail—which is maintained with built-in steps for much of the ascent—typically start at around $100. The trek is considered manageable for most visitors and often led by experienced guides, such as those from Awenk Adventure, who have been familiar with the terrain for 15 years. Along the way, hikers encounter local wildlife, including a troop of monkeys near a designated "Monkey Attack Zone." While no attacks were reported on this particular journey, visitors are advised to avoid carrying openly visible food to prevent unwanted encounters.
The first waterfall along the trail serves as an initial reward, attracting visitors who pause to take photographs at its base. Beyond this, the trail leads to a river crossing where hikers typically remove their shoes to ford the cold, flowing water over rocks before continuing upward.
The second waterfall is considerably larger and more dramatic. As hikers approach, the sound of cascading water intensifies until the falls are revealed in full view, a broad curtain of water plunging into a mist-filled pool below. The drop generates a cooling mist felt even from 20 meters away. Some adventurers choose to wade into the icy water at the pool’s edges, though many, including this observer, prefer to remain onshore due to the low temperature.
The return journey involves crossing the river again, this time often without removing footwear, before descending through the humid jungle past the previous waterfall and monkey territory. Despite the persistent heat, wet feet, and physical exertion, the rewarding views and natural beauty make the trek a memorable experience for those visiting Lombok’s rugged volcanic landscape.
