Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $927 million globally in its opening weekend, marking the second biggest debut for a film both domestically and worldwide. The movie, released in 2026, features Tom Holland in his fourth portrayal of the iconic superhero Peter Parker. The storyline centers on Parker navigating a world where his identity as Spider-Man has been erased, while also exploring themes of loneliness and the search for connection. Zendaya co-stars as MJ, Parker’s love interest.
In the United States and Canada, the film generated $355 million, making it the second-largest opening weekend after 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which made $357 million at the box office, unadjusted for inflation. Internationally, it grossed $572 million, with China contributing $121 million and Australia recording its biggest opening weekend of the year with $21.4 million in ticket sales.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, called the opening “truly phenomenal.” The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day adds to Marvel’s dominance at the box office, with the studio now holding the four highest-grossing global opening weekends: Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion), Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($927 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($641 million), and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($601 million), figures that are not adjusted for inflation.
Critically, the film has been well received, holding a 90% approval rating from professional reviewers and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Industry executives have highlighted the film’s emotional resonance as a key factor behind its broad appeal. Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, described it as “fundamentally a movie about friendship,” emphasizing its universal themes that resonate with audiences of all ages globally.
Analysts have noted that the film’s focus on themes such as isolation and overcoming adversity strikes a chord, particularly with younger viewers. Greg Durkin, CEO of entertainment research firm Enact Insight, pointed out that the movie addresses a “friendship crisis” and mental health challenges among young people, in particular young men, exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The strong opening of Spider-Man: Brand New Day contributes to a robust 2026 summer box office, which has also been fueled by major releases like Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey. According to Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, the combined draw of recent films has created the “all-time biggest domestic weekend” in cinemas. However, despite this momentum, domestic box office revenue for the year remains 16% below pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019, though it is up 10% compared to last year.
