The Washington Spirit reclaimed first place in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) following a 1-0 victory over the Denver Summit on Sunday evening at Audi Field. The decisive goal came in the 61st minute when Sofia Cantore capitalized on a quick break led by Trinity Rodman.

Rodman collected a long pass down the left flank and delivered a precise cross into the penalty area. Despite being closely marked by two defenders, Cantore maneuvered to create space and struck a shot that found the top right corner of the net, leaving Denver’s goalkeeper Abby Smith unable to prevent the goal. This marked Cantore’s third goal of the season and Rodman’s fifth assist, surpassing teammate Leicy Santos for the team lead in assists.

With the win, Washington improved to 10-3-3 on the season, securing its 10th victory in 12 league matches. The Spirit currently hold 33 points through 16 games, edging out Gotham FC, which has 31 points, and the Utah Royals with 30 points. Meanwhile, the San Diego Wave’s 2-0 defeat at home to Seattle Reign earlier Sunday left them with 29 points in 17 matches.

Sunday’s results tighten the competition at the top of the NWSL standings as the regular season progresses. Washington’s strong second-half performance and stout defense contributed to maintaining their position as league leaders, positioning them favorably for the playoff push.
