The Oman School Sports Association, in partnership with the British Embassy, has launched the second phase of its Sports Ambassadors programme aimed at empowering schoolgirls across six educational governorates. Beginning Monday, the initiative seeks to cultivate young female leadership and boost participation in school sports and physical activities.
The programme provides students with opportunities to develop leadership, communication, teamwork, and creative skills, preparing them to become advocates for physical activity among their peers. This phase will be implemented through a series of training sessions combining practical exercises with interactive learning across the governorates of Al Dakhiliyah, Al Sharqiyah North, Al Wusta, Al Sharqiyah South, Musandam, and Dhofar.
The rollout commenced at Al Shaikha Nadhira Al Riyamiyah School for Girls in Al Dakhiliyah. Subsequent sessions are scheduled at Sinaw School for Girls in Al Sharqiyah North on Tuesday, Hajj School for Girls in Al Wusta on Wednesday, Maimouna bint Saad School for Girls in Al Sharqiyah South on Thursday, Khawla bint Al Azwar School for Girls in Musandam, and will conclude at Al Saada School for Girls in Dhofar the following Monday.
Central to the programme is a practical workshop designed to equip participants with the skills required to assume leadership roles in both school and community sports. Activities focus on fostering confidence, communication, teamwork, and initiative, while encouraging students to create opportunities that promote physical activity among their classmates.
The initiative also addresses barriers that might hinder peers from engaging in sports, challenging students to devise inclusive activities that cater to varying interests and abilities regardless of prior sporting experience. This approach aims to broaden access to physical activity for all students.
Teachers are integral to the programme, with components aimed at enhancing their capacity to support and mentor students, fostering a school culture that values initiative and active participation. Additionally, a workshop on athlete safeguarding is being conducted alongside the programme to raise awareness regarding safe and supportive environments in sports settings.
This second phase follows the programme’s initial rollout, which involved five governorates—Al Batinah North, Al Batinah South, Al Dhahirah, Al Buraimi, and Muscat—and reached over 150 students. The expansion underscores the organisers’ ongoing commitment to increasing female participation in school sports and nurturing the next generation of confident young female sports leaders.
