The Sports Medicine Center in Kuwait, affiliated with the Public Authority for Youth and Sports, offers comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation services for athletes who have sustained physical and muscular injuries across various sports disciplines. Since its establishment in 1981, the center has developed into a specialized facility equipped with advanced technology and staffed by experienced professionals dedicated to helping athletes recover and enhance their performance.

Walid Al-Enezi, the center’s director, noted that it is one of the oldest specialized sports medicine centers in the Middle East. Originally linked to the Ministry of Social Affairs and focused mainly on restoring injured athletes to their prior physical condition, the center became part of the Public Authority for Youth and Sports in 1992. Over time, its scope expanded significantly, evolving into a multidisciplinary facility that not only treats injuries but also works on injury prevention.

The center provides services to athletes registered with a sports federation under the Kuwait Olympic Committee, including both Kuwaiti nationals and professional players. Its offerings include eye and dental care, physiological testing to monitor vital signs such as heart function, and comprehensive health assessments, especially aimed at safeguarding young athletes. Al-Enezi urged athletes to undergo preventive medical examinations before engaging in competitive sports to help coaches, clubs, and parents better understand their physical status and reduce the risk of sports-related injuries.

The Physical Therapy Department, overseen by acting head Salem Al-Mutairi, houses a fully equipped gym designed to support physical fitness and post-surgical rehabilitation. The department also provides electrotherapy to alleviate pain and address muscle weakness. Al-Mutairi stressed that treatment begins with opening a personalized file for each athlete to enable precise diagnosis and tailored rehabilitation plans. According to him, all cases are managed to optimize recovery and help athletes return to their previous levels of functioning.

Physical therapist Jassim Mousa highlighted the center’s holistic approach, emphasizing teamwork and including psychological support to rebuild athletes’ confidence and overcome barriers such as fear after injury. He described the importance of understanding each athlete’s lifestyle factors, including daily routines and nutrition, to customize care and expedite recovery. Mousa also underscored the necessity of athletes adhering closely to the staged treatment plans provided by physical therapists, noting that successful rehabilitation depends equally on the center’s care and the athlete’s commitment.

The Sports Medicine Center encompasses a broad array of specialized departments, including facilities for weight training, electrotherapy, oxygen therapy, nutrition, radiology, ophthalmology, dentistry, blood testing, physiology, and health education. Together, these resources create a comprehensive environment for supporting athletes’ health and performance across individual and team sports.
