A 28-year-old homeless man was arrested Saturday morning after allegedly attacking three contractors with a metal pipe inside a shuttered church in Berkeley. The incident occurred at Trinity United Methodist Church, located near Bancroft Way and Dana Street, around 10:45 a.m., according to police.

Authorities reported that the contractors were working inside the long-closed church when they encountered Donald Malone, who was sleeping in the building. The situation escalated when Malone reportedly picked up a five-foot metal pipe and swung it at the workers after they attempted to wake him.

Cellphone footage from the scene captured Malone holding the pipe and shouting at the contractors. One of the workers is heard telling a police dispatcher that Malone was approaching them, while Malone can be heard yelling for them to keep their distance. The video ends abruptly shortly after the confrontation intensified.

It remains unclear whether any of the contractors sustained injuries during the incident. Police estimated that the damage inside the church exceeded $20,000.

The church is situated directly across from UC Berkeley’s Recreational Sports Facility, the university’s main gym, and the incident occurred amid a busy weekend as students were moving into campus housing. Authorities have not released further details about potential charges against Malone or the precise cause of the damage inside the building.
