The University of Peradeniya has established Sri Lanka’s first endowed professorship scheme through a private donation, marking a significant development in the country’s higher education landscape. The announcement was made during the recent I-PURSE research session held at the university.

The initiative traces its origins to the tenure of former vice chancellor Prof D M Lamawansa and aims to foster partnerships within the university system that support research, nurture academic talent, and enhance Sri Lanka’s role in global scholarship. The scheme also highlights how alumni and private citizens can play a vital role in advancing higher education in the country.

The initial endowment was funded by contributions from Prof Lakshman Samaranayake, an esteemed alumnus of the Faculty of Dental Sciences and former Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong. Following approval by the University Senate and ratification by the University Council in 2025, the scheme was officially enacted.

The first endowed professorship has been awarded to Senior Professor Rohana Chandrajith, who was selected by a high-level university committee. Professor Chandrajith will hold the title of Prof Lakshman Samaranayake Endowed Professorship in Geology. The funding for his research will come from the interest generated by the endowment, which totals Rs1.8 million.

Vice Chancellor Prof Terrence Madhujith formally presented the award to Senior Professor Chandrajith at the I-PURSE session, underscoring the importance of this initiative for the university and the broader academic community.

The endowment funds are managed in perpetuity in a university account, with annual interest allocated to support the endowed professorship. The establishment of this scheme represents a key step in forging stronger connections between universities, alumni, benefactors, and the wider community in Sri Lanka.
