Eamon O’Carroll has emphasized that his role as interim coach of St Helens extends beyond immediate match results, focusing instead on preparing the team for sustained success in the future. Following the club’s narrow 34-32 defeat to York on Saturday, a team that competed part-time in the Championship last season, St Helens face the prospect of missing the Super League play-offs for the first time in their history.

O’Carroll, 39, was appointed to the position after the dismissal of former head coach Paul Rowley last month. Ahead of St Helens’ upcoming match against Hull FC, he stressed that his priorities include more than just winning games. “This is a much bigger job than just performance,” he said. “This is about instilling some things that will help the club in the future. That’s my main objective.”

The interim coach acknowledged the importance of giving younger players increased game time, noting that the experience they are gaining now will be valuable in the longer term. “Some of the younger lads are getting some exposure now,” O’Carroll said. “Long term it’s going to be better for us and really beneficial.”
