A stadium originally constructed for Olympic athletes has been repurposed as an emergency shelter for dogs rescued from wildfires in Greece. The fires, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 78 mph, have swept through the Attica region surrounding Athens, causing extensive damage. Firefighters continued their efforts to contain the blaze as of yesterday, following the destruction of homes in the villages of Porto Germeno and Psatha.

Volunteers at the Megara Olympians Municipal Stadium transformed a running track into a temporary refuge for the displaced animals. More than 110 dogs have been housed at the facility since the fires began last week. The animals, many of whom were seen resting after receiving food and water, are being evaluated by veterinarians upon arrival for injuries or signs of illness. Those rescued include both strays and pets identifiable by collars.

Officials and animal welfare groups have expressed concern over the broader environmental impact of the wildfires. Charities have highlighted the loss of habitats for various wildlife species, such as wild horses and deer, in the affected areas. Recent data released this week indicate that the Attica region has lost approximately 42 percent of its forests to wildfires over the past decade.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledged the significant environmental damage caused by the fires and pledged government support for natural regeneration efforts. "We are dealing with major environmental damage, and we will do all we can to support nature as it proceeds, at its own pace, through the process of natural regeneration," he said.
