Mont St Michel, the iconic tidal island abbey off the coast of Normandy, France, offers a unique opportunity for stand-up paddleboarding on its rising tides. Located approximately half a mile from the mainland and about 30 miles east of Saint-Malo, the site draws around three million visitors annually, often creating densely crowded conditions on the causeway and within the small commune.

A recent visit to the bay allowed for a different experience, with a group tackling the waters at sunrise to avoid the typical crowds. Guided by Ian Wood, operator of Kayak La Baie, the paddlers launched their boards just below the abbey’s walls during a morning high tide. The timing permitted them to navigate the estuarine channels and streams carved by the tidal ebb, an experience noted for its technical challenges due to shifting water pathways and strong currents.

Mont St Michel Bay is known for its hazardous tidal conditions, including rapidly changing water levels, a twice-daily tidal bore, and areas of quicksand. As such, the paddleboarding excursion requires the presence of an experienced guide to ensure safety. While the group did not coincide with a spring tide—when the more powerful mascaret tidal bore occurs twice a month— they encountered a smaller daily tidal wave. This wave swept the paddlers and their boards around the eastern and southern sides of the island with notable speed and power.

The presence of local wildlife, including harbor seals, added to the natural spectacle during the paddle. After around two hours on the water, the group returned to shore just as the daytime tourists began arriving by shuttle bus. These shuttles connect the mainland car park to the causeway, easing access for the thousands who visit each day during peak periods.

Beyond paddleboarding, Mont St Michel offers other recreational options, including kayaking trips down the River Sélune that finish near the bay and various boat tours. For visitors staying overnight, nearby Avranches provides accommodations and dining opportunities, while a handful of guesthouses exist within the walled town itself.

During July and August evenings, the abbey hosts sound and light displays detailing its history dating back to the 8th century. These events offer a cultural experience that complements the natural beauty and historical significance of the site.

Kayak La Baie offers sunrise paddleboarding excursions around Mont St Michel from £26 per person, emphasizing the unique perspective the tidal environment provides when accessed through guided water activities.
