Stanway Rovers moved off the bottom of the table with a 3-0 victory over Cheshunt at Hawthorns on Sunday, under challenging weather conditions marked by strong winds and heavy rain. The win marked a crucial turnaround for Brad Wellmen’s side, who had struggled earlier in the season.

The first half saw Cheshunt dominate possession and territory, putting considerable pressure on Stanway’s defense. However, goalkeeper Khiani Shombe was instrumental in keeping the visitors at bay, notably denying striker Kenny Coker three close-range attempts within a short span. Despite Cheshunt’s attacking dominance, it was Stanway who opened the scoring through former Amber Matty Fanimo, whose goal gave the home side a timely boost of confidence.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Cheshunt maintaining control of the ball but failing to convert chances into goals. Stanway, meanwhile, remained dangerous on counterattacks, exploiting gaps in the visitors’ defense. In the 84th minute, Fanimo held up play before setting up Stephen Toussaint, who fired a shot across the goalkeeper to double the lead.

The victory was sealed in stoppage time when Toussaint calmly converted a penalty, ensuring a 3-0 win for Stanway Rovers. Both teams battled difficult conditions throughout, but Stanway showed resilience and clinical finishing to secure a vital three points and move away from the relegation zone.
