Shaquille Gwengwe, who scored 47 goals last season for Poole Town, has made the step up from non-league football to sign for League Two side Newport County. The 25-year-old forward attracted interest from clubs across England, Scotland, and Wales over the summer before deciding that Newport County offered the best opportunity for his continued development.

Gwengwe said his choice was based on finding an environment where he could both enjoy playing and continue to improve his game. “I thought Newport was the right place,” he said, praising the club’s welcoming atmosphere during pre-season. He added that the discussions he had with the club aligned well with his ambitions and expectations. “Now for me it is about getting into the team and scoring goals,” Gwengwe said, expressing confidence in his ability to secure a regular place.

The forward moved up from Step 3 of the non-league pyramid but stated he was focused on proving himself at this higher level rather than dwelling on the jump. His early appearances for Newport included a debut in a 3-0 win at Bristol Manor Farm and a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory over Newport City. Gwengwe acknowledged the importance of starting well and noted the support he has received since joining the Exiles.

Reflecting on his journey, Gwengwe highlighted the challenges and lessons learned throughout his time in non-league football. He credited that experience with shaping his resilience and technical ability, saying that competing regularly against tough defenders helped him develop into the player he is today. “I wasn’t built in the academy system, I was built in the lower ranks of Non-League,” he remarked.

Gwengwe set goals for himself each season and said he surpassed his targets significantly in his last campaign. He aims to carry that momentum forward as he adapts to professional football. Behind his rise are several mentors and supporters, including managers Pat Suraci and Joe Lea, as well as vice-chairman Andy Rossiter, all of whom he thanked for their role in his development.

Before joining Poole Town, Gwengwe had spells with clubs such as Worthing, AFC Totton, and Dorchester Town. He spoke highly of the support he received throughout his career and expressed gratitude to his family and those who guided him along the way. “Once a Dolphin, always a Dolphin,” he said, underscoring his connection to Poole Town even as he embarks on the next stage of his career.
