A lightsaber prop used by Luke Skywalker in the 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back" sold for a record $3.75 million at an auction held by Heritage Auctions in Los Angeles on July 21. The piece, which includes the lightsaber and the severed hand effects rig used during the Cloud City fight scene where Darth Vader reveals his paternity, achieved the highest price ever recorded for a prop from a "Star Wars" film.

The auction featured a range of notable memorabilia from Hollywood and entertainment history. Among the other significant sales was a Wicked Witch of the West hat worn by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," which fetched $550,000. Additionally, the cocoa-colored top hat worn by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" sold for $350,000.

Items from the television series "Game of Thrones" were also represented, with a prop featuring Daenerys Targaryen’s chest containing dragon eggs from the show’s first season bringing in $312,500.

Unique collectibles from the 1998 film "The Big Lebowski" sold for amounts well above their initial estimates. The rug belonging to Jeff Bridges’ character, the Dude — which is soiled in the opening scenes and described as one that “really tied the room together” — sold for $350,000. A second, more pristine rug, used later in the film by the wealthy namesake character, exceeded this with a final price of $375,000. Both items had starting bids of $15,000.

The buyers and sellers of the auctioned items were not disclosed.
