Mitchell Starc, the veteran Australian left-arm fast bowler, has addressed recent criticism concerning his delayed arrival for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, clarifying that his absence is due to injury management. Starc, who is contracted with the Delhi Capitals, refuted suggestions that his unavailability stems from a lack of commitment to the franchise.
The 36-year-old pacer has yet to join his team in India and will miss the Delhi Capitals' opening matches. This situation has contributed to a broader debate in cricketing circles regarding the dedication of overseas players to their IPL franchises.
In a statement released on Saturday, Starc directly challenged what he described as "misinformed claims." He specifically referred to "certain individuals" who, using "platforms in and through the Indian media," had made "strong statements" and provided "heavily misinformed opinions of players, preached them as facts." Starc asserted that these commentators had claimed "to know my body better than me."
Starc explained that his current focus is on rehabilitation for injuries affecting both his shoulder and elbow. He noted that the full extent of these physical issues was not known to him during the preceding Australian summer cricket season. His priority, he stated, is to complete his recovery to ensure his fitness.
While robustly defending his position against the criticism, Starc also conveyed an apology to the Delhi Capitals franchise for his inability to be present from the start of the league. He reiterated his unwavering commitment to the team. "I remain committed to join DC," Starc affirmed, adding that he is in "continual communication" with the team, providing updates, and will "continue to do what I can to be available for DC as soon as possible."
Last IPL season, Starc was a key performer for his franchise, securing 14 wickets. He is currently focused on completing his rehabilitation program with the aim of joining the Delhi Capitals squad for the remainder of the IPL 2026 campaign.
