The search for the next actor to portray James Bond is advancing to its final stages, five years after Daniel Craig’s departure from the role in *No Time To Die*. This weekend, several leading contenders are reported to be gathering in London for screen tests as the casting process intensifies.
Among the frontrunners expected to participate are Callum Turner, known for his role in the Apple TV series *Masters of the Air*, and Jack Lowden, who stars in *Slow Horses*. Also believed to be in the running is Josh O’Connor, recognized for his portrayal of Prince Charles in *The Crown* and his work in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi film *Disclosure Day*. Each of the three actors is 36 years old. Reports indicate there may be up to two additional finalists.
Several other actors linked to the role earlier in the process include Jack Barton, 31, who appeared in the BBC drama *SAS: Rogue Heroes*, written by Bond screenwriter Steven Knight, and Paul Mescal, 30, set to star in *Gladiator II*. Jack O’Connell, 36, who also featured in *SAS: Rogue Heroes* as well as films like *Sinners* and *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*, has reportedly withdrawn from the competition. Similarly, Jacob Elordi, 29, known for *Saltburn* and previously among the favorites, is said to have dropped out.
The upcoming screen tests, which could commence as early as this weekend, are understood to consist of three components: physical stunts, camera presence, and delivering dialogue. Amazon Studios, through its Amazon MGM division, is overseeing production of the next Bond film. An Amazon spokesperson reiterated previous statements acknowledging an ongoing casting process but declined to provide specific details, stating only that they look forward to sharing further news with fans when appropriate.
Amy Pascal, one of the producers of the forthcoming Bond installment, indicated in August that the new lead would be announced before the end of the year. She acknowledged the difficulty of replacing Daniel Craig, emphasizing the need for a fresh and compelling take on the iconic spy. The untitled film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for his work on *Dune*, with *Harry Potter* executive producer David Heyman collaborating alongside Pascal.
Steven Knight, who is writing the script, remarked on the significance of his involvement, describing it as a “duty for King and country.” He highlighted Bond’s unique place as a distinctly British franchise, separate from the superhero universes of DC and Marvel, and noted a commitment to respecting the established rules of the series while ensuring it evolves with the times.
