A new guide has been published to assist UK homeowners aged 55 and over in understanding equity release and later-life mortgage options. The Equity Release & Later-Life Mortgages Guide 2026/27, produced in collaboration between Royal London Equity Release Advisers and a financial journalism team, aims to provide clear and comprehensive information to help individuals make informed decisions about accessing the wealth tied up in their property.
The guide addresses the increasing interest among older homeowners in unlocking property equity to meet various financial needs. It covers different types of equity release plans, retirement interest-only mortgages, and traditional mortgage products, outlining the key features, benefits, and potential drawbacks of each. It is intended as a resource for those considering using property wealth for purposes such as home improvements, mortgage repayment, or providing financial support to family members.
Importantly, the guide underscores the importance of understanding the implications of equity release, including its effects on inheritance and family finances. It also highlights the necessity of seeking specialist financial advice before proceeding. The publication includes answers to common questions, practical advice, and explanations presented in accessible language to help readers navigate what can be a complex financial decision.
Initial advisory consultations based on the guide’s offerings are provided free of charge and without obligation. However, if a client chooses to proceed with an equity release arrangement, a standard advice fee of £1,890 will be applied, in addition to any lender or solicitor fees required to complete the transaction.
By offering a balanced overview of later-life lending products and their associated considerations, the guide aims to equip older homeowners with the knowledge needed to evaluate their options carefully and select the approach best suited to their circumstances and financial goals.
