Stellantis and Chinese automaker Leapmotor have jointly introduced the B03X, a new electric SUV aimed at the competitive UK market. The launch underscores the increasing collaboration between Chinese car manufacturers and European automotive companies. Stellantis holds a 20 percent stake in Leapmotor and a majority 51 percent share in Leapmotor International, the joint venture responsible for distributing the vehicles outside China. This partnership allows Leapmotor to leverage Stellantis’ established dealer and aftersales networks in Europe, while Stellantis gains access to competitively priced EV technology from its Chinese partner.
The B03X is the brand’s second offering in the UK, complementing four other Leapmotor models planned for the market, with a B03 supermini scheduled for release in 2027. The SUV features design elements reminiscent of the Mini Countryman Electric, featuring an upright stance, high roofline, and contrasting black pillars. However, the B03X incorporates softer styling cues, including rounded front and rear ends and curved LED lights that create a subtle “smile” effect. While its exterior is functional and approachable, the design aims more for practicality than memorability.
Inside, the vehicle embraces a minimalist design approach common to many electric vehicles. The dashboard is uncluttered, dominated by a 14.6-inch central touchscreen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The cabin employs soft-touch materials that tend toward a rubbery texture rather than premium finishes. A light interior color scheme contributes to a spacious feel. The single trim level comes well equipped with heated front seats and steering wheel, eco-leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, smartphone key access, and electrically adjustable front seats. Rear seat comfort is adequate though firmness is noticeable.
The B03X excels in practicality, featuring 33 cabin storage compartments and a flat floor to maximize passenger space. Its boot capacity totals 510 liters when including a hidden 105-liter secondary washable compartment, surpassing the Kia EV3’s cargo volume. Folding the rear seats increases load length to 2.53 meters, enhancing versatility.
Performance-wise, the B03X is powered by a 194-horsepower electric motor, with a claimed acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 8.6 seconds. Despite the figures, the driving experience feels less dynamic than expected. Steering has been described as overly light and disconnected, and different driving modes produce minimal change. Testing also revealed inefficiencies in the air-conditioning system, which only performed effectively at maximum output.
On the positive side, the B03X delivers a quiet and comfortable ride, with effective noise insulation and a smooth suspension that handles uneven surfaces confidently. Adjustable regenerative braking works well in urban settings, and driver assistance features are less intrusive compared to those in many rival Chinese models.
Priced at around £26,995 after the inclusion of Leapmotor’s own £1,500 ‘Leap Grant,’ the B03X undercuts many competitors while offering a comprehensive equipment package. The SUV is equipped with a 53kWh battery that provides an estimated WLTP range of 237 miles, and supports rapid charging from 30 to 80 percent in approximately 16 minutes.
While not a performance standout or highly engaging behind the wheel, the B03X offers competitive practicality, strong standard features, and family-oriented versatility at an accessible price point. Its European ties via Stellantis and refined design may appeal to buyers seeking a budget-friendly electric SUV, despite some dynamic shortcomings.
