Stephen King has publicly expressed support for Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Maine, despite sexual assault allegations made against him by his former girlfriend. The woman has accused Platner of breaking into her home and sexually assaulting her while intoxicated.

Following the allegations, many Democrats withdrew their endorsements of Platner and called on him to suspend his campaign. However, King, a prominent author known for his horror novels, took to social media to criticize what he described as hypocrisy on Capitol Hill, suggesting that many lawmakers have hidden misconduct in their pasts.

In a message posted on the platform X, King wrote that while he hopes Platner remains in the race, the current leadership, whom he referred to as the "Abuser in Chief," continues to operate without consequence. He further remarked that if the full truths about members of Congress were made public, the legislative chambers would be nearly vacant.

King’s remarks generated significant backlash on social media, where critics accused him of downplaying serious allegations and showing insensitivity toward survivors of sexual assault. Supporters of Platner have noted that he denies the accusations and emphasize the principle of due process amid political fallout.

The Maine Democratic Party has not issued a response to King’s comments, maintaining their position urging Platner to step aside as investigations into the allegations continue. The case has added a contentious dimension to the already competitive Senate race in Maine, with legal and political authorities closely monitoring developments.
