Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has called for support to help Florian Wirtz regain confidence as the German midfielder continues to struggle following his high-profile £100 million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2025. Wirtz has yet to make a significant impact at Anfield, with his form coming under scrutiny after Liverpool’s first Premier League defeat of the season, a loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

Gerrard highlighted that Wirtz’s confidence is currently low and that the player is not performing at the level expected. He stressed the importance of providing assistance not only from the management team but also from senior squad members. “He needs help from his manager, from his coaches and from his senior players,” Gerrard said. He suggested that while Wirtz might not hold a place in a fully fit Liverpool side at present, the club’s ongoing injury challenges require everyone to come together to support the midfielder.

Despite the difficulties, Gerrard remains convinced of Wirtz’s potential and ability to succeed in the Premier League. He acknowledged that the player has faced a tough adaptation period to England's top flight, noting that Wirtz has been physically tested. “This kid is a major talent. I’ve seen enough to give him a chance — but he needs help and support now,” Gerrard remarked. He added that it is too soon to write off the player’s future with Liverpool, though Wirtz must show greater consistency and seize the opportunities available to him.

Liverpool are currently dealing with a significant injury crisis, with just 15 fit outfield players available ahead of their Champions League fixture against Austrian club LASK. Gerrard believes that if other players such as Bradley Barcola, Alexander Isak, Victor Munoz, Hugo Ekitike, and Rio Ngumoha return to full fitness and form, it will ease pressure on Wirtz by providing more support around him. He also acknowledged the broader transitional challenges the team faces amid substantial investment and squad changes.

Jamie Carragher, another former Liverpool player, has expressed a differing view, suggesting Wirtz might be better suited playing out wide rather than in his current role. Gerrard’s call for a collective effort to aid the midfielder’s development underscores the club’s awareness of the need to balance patience with performance as Wirtz adapts to Liverpool’s demands.
