Australian cricket officials are increasingly optimistic that Ben Stokes will participate in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, with several clubs showing interest in securing his services. The Sydney Sixers have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign the England all-rounder.

Stokes, who abruptly retired from Test cricket in June, has opened his schedule to play more franchise cricket. Having last appeared in the BBL with the Melbourne Renegades over ten years ago, the prospect of his return would be seen as a significant boost for the domestic competition.

Following his retirement from international cricket and the England captaincy, Stokes’ availability became an attractive option for BBL teams. However, uncertainty surrounded whether he would prioritize playing in Australia or wait for the SA20 league in South Africa, which begins mid-January after England’s Test series there.

Negotiations over amended player list rules between Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers Association have delayed formal signings for the BBL. Nonetheless, sources within the league have indicated that Stokes appears inclined to participate in at least a portion of the tournament.

While multiple teams have expressed interest in acquiring the 35-year-old all-rounder, the Sydney Sixers are considered the leading candidates. The Sixers recently appointed Matthew Mott, former England white-ball coach, to lead the team, which could further incentivize Stokes’ involvement with the club this season.
