Ben Stokes marked his return to county cricket with a commanding unbeaten century, leading Durham to a five-wicket victory over Derbyshire Falcons in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at the OurCoop County Ground on Wednesday.

In his first match since retiring from international cricket, Stokes scored 108 not out off 123 balls despite battling a leg injury throughout his innings. His innings helped Durham chase down Derbyshire’s total of 256 for 9 with five balls to spare, finishing on 257 for 5.

Stokes also contributed with the ball, delivering nine economical overs for just 38 runs. Derbyshire’s innings was anchored by Martin Andersson, who scored a fluent 112 as the Falcons posted their total. After losing early wickets, Derbyshire stabilised through Andersson’s partnership with Guest, who shared a 112-run stand before being dismissed in the 28th over.

Derbyshire’s middle order collapsed late in the innings, losing three wickets for six runs, allowing Ben Aitchison to help push the total past 250 and apply pressure during Durham’s reply. Aitchison had an immediate impact with the ball, removing both Graham Clark and Alex Lees to reduce Durham to 24 for 2 after nine overs.

Stokes was initially cautious, facing 28 balls before scoring his first boundary amid tight bowling from Derbyshire’s attack. He combined with Rhodes to put on 74 runs for the third wicket, a partnership that steadied Durham’s innings before Rhodes was caught in the 26th over.

Despite his leg problem, Stokes continued to accelerate, hitting sixes off Shoaib Bashir and reaching his half-century with a four off Nick Potts. However, the injury forced him to seek treatment and limited his running as Durham’s innings became increasingly precarious with wickets falling at critical moments.

With the match finely balanced, Stokes completed his century on 116 balls and, along with Kasey Aldridge, guided Durham to a memorable win against the run of play.

The crowd of approximately 1,300 witnessed an impressive all-round display from the 35-year-old, whose performance injected vital momentum into Durham’s campaign and provided a confident start to his post-international cricket career.
